Take a look here for an overview of the process:

If you can give us the make / model of the drive we can probably take a look
more specifically and probably someone here knows something about it.

Subject: [Simply Computers] Configuring Optical Drive
I'm trying to get a replacement CD/DVD drive working on my Toshiba laptop.
Apparently, my problem is that the computer is set up for a master/slave
relationship, while the replacement drive is configured as a cable/select
drive. In the old days, we simply changed jumpers on the drive but there are
no jumpers on these drives. The configuration has to be done by flashing the
drive's firmware. Has anyone had experience doing this? Is it difficult? Can
it be done in Windows, even though the computer is ignoring the drive?
I'd appreciate any advice.
